Gates and gate automation in the Sutherland Shire

Updated October 2026

A fence is only as useful as its gates. Whether it is a single side gate that finally latches properly, a double gate wide enough for the trailer, or an automated sliding gate across the driveway, the gate is the part of the fence you touch every day. If you need gates or gate automation in the Sutherland Shire, tell us what you are after and an experienced, insured local fencer will call you back with a price.

Gate types the local fencers build

Matching matters. A slat gate hung in a rendered pier, or a Colorbond gate framed to sit flush in the fence line, is what separates a tidy job from an afterthought. The fencers we refer build gates as part of the fence, not as a bolt-on.

Automation, what to think about

Automation is where a gate goes from convenient to genuinely good to live with, especially on a busy road or a steep driveway. A few things decide the setup:

What gates cost

Gates are priced per gate rather than per metre, and the spread is wide: a basic side gate is a few hundred dollars, while a large automated sliding gate in a premium finish can run well into the thousands once the opener, electrical work and access hardware are counted. Size, material, piers, slope and automation drive the price, so treat anything you read as guide pricing only and get the job quoted on site. Our fencing cost guide covers how gates affect an overall fencing budget.

How the referral works

Shire Fencing is a referral service. We do not build or install gates ourselves. You fill in the form, we pass the job to an experienced, insured local fencer who works your suburb, and they call you back with a free quote. Where a job needs a licensed electrician for the opener, the fencer arranges or recommends that as part of their quote. No obligation, and you deal with them directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can my existing gate be automated?

Often yes, if the gate and posts are sound and square. Heavy or sagging gates usually need rehanging or new posts first. An installer will assess it as part of the quote rather than bolting an opener onto a gate that drags.

Swing or sliding gate for my driveway?

Swing gates need room to travel and work best on flat driveways with space behind the gate line. Sliding gates need clear run-off room along the fence and handle slopes much better. Driveway shape usually makes the decision for you.

Do automated gates work in a blackout?

Not automatically, unless the opener has battery backup. Every opener has a manual release so the gate can be moved by hand. Ask for the release to be demonstrated at handover.

My gate drags or will not latch. Is that a repair or a new gate?

Usually a repair. Sagging hinges, moved posts and worn latches are routine fixes. See fence repairs, and the fencer will tell you straight if the gate is past saving.
